And we're OFF!
Inspired by the local Parkdale Food Centre. The students have decided to make supporting the food bank a classroom initiative. They are creating announcements, posters, wrapping boxes and making a train. Our plan, create a train long enough to knock on their front door. We will be asking Hilson families for food, Canadian Tire money, Hygiene products, and money for the next two weeks. Wish us luck!!

The Kindness Project strikes again!! The students in my new school, Hilson Avenue Public School have taken on the Kindness Project as a challenge. We began with writing all of the things we appreciate about school on the windows outside our classroom (don't worry we had permission).
Come in and see our beautiful work of kindness graffiti. I cannot wait until I learn what else the kids are inspired by.
Below you will see a smattering of some of the wonderful things we did last year to mark the first year of the kindness project. I cannot wait to see what the children come up with this year to help spread the kindness forward.
Munster Elementary School 2014 2015 - The grade 4/5 class began the Kindness Project.
2904, the number of milk bags we have collected so far this year for "Milk Bags to Bed Mats"
We Are Silent
As always, the children in my class are inspired by what they see and hear around them. Goulbourn Middle School went silent today, asking others to notice and acknowledge those who are silenced and are rarely, if ever, heard. The children asked why, together we spoke about slavery, human rights, bullying, abuse, the homeless, mentally disabled, and the poor). They decided they wanted to share the experience of being silent to support and listen to others' whose voices may not be heard. Today we went silent for second block and experienced the frustrations one might feel if you just aren't heard. |
Milk Bag Collection
We have found a home for our "Milk Bags for Haiti". We are packaging them up for a group in Ottawa, "Milk Bags to Bed Mats". We are now accepting milk bags again in the classroom.

A CHEO Coin Drive
That's right, the children have found a new and exciting way to give. For 2 weeks we will be collecting coins in a coin drive. Raising money for the CHEO foundation.
The children have created PSAs and posters for the CHEO Foundation to help further our goal.. I will post those at a later date. For now, be sure to send in those coins until Friday April 24th.

Vote for the Next Charity in the Kindness Project
We are looking to raise some money for our next project. We have some ideas on what to do to raise money however we are divided as to what to raise the money for. We'd love your vote. |
It's been a banner week for the Kindness Project!! We have accomplished 2 HUGE goals; we have raised over $500 for Plan Canada AND we have completed our Winter Warmth initiative, donating an amazing amount of winter clothing and blankets to the Shepherds of Good Hope. WOW! What a month end.

The Bake Sale
The plan was to have a little bake sale for "THE PLAN", we needed to make $224 to fulfill our goal of $500. With 56 children and 10 staff in the school, I thought we may be able to clear about $150. $231.15 later, we surpassed our goal by $7.15. As always, we are so very grateful to everyone who was a part, everyone who baked, who bought, who ate - one community in a developing country will be changed forever! Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. |
Our Pile of Clothing for the Homeless is growing - we have commandeered the Lost and Found Bin and have filled it to overflowing, keep those donations flowing, we truly are creating a "Mountain of Warmth" this January. I will post a picture this weekend.

January is Winter Warmth Month
Winter in the Ottawa area is particularly cold for those less fortunate than us in our little room 2. We would like to share some of the kindness with others in Ottawa by helping them stay warm as well. We are looking to collect new and gently used socks, hats, coats, mittens, blankets and sleeping bags for the homeless.
The Shepherds of Good Hope know very well that giving doesn’t stop at Christmas, the needs are year round. They are in great need of seasonal clothing and blankets for anyone who walks through their doors; let’s help them by creating a mountain of warmth this January.

The Plan
with Plan Canada One initiative and the children raised $271, in January they are planning a bake sale in order to generate more funds toward their goal. |
Our Goal: $500 to Equip a School
"The school will have water pumps, separate latrines for girls, and canteens filled with tables, chairs, pots and pans, and nutritious dried goods for making healthy, filling meals. They’ll be built with ramps and wider doors, making them accessible for children with disabilities. They’ll have playgrounds, trees, well-trained teachers, desks, chairs and blackboards: all the essentials for creating the best possible learning environment." http://plancanada.ca/GiftsofHope/products/37-100-500/204-Help-equip-a-school/ |
The Gingerbread Initiative
3 days, 300+ cookies, $276 and 12 excited students learning to dream for others and make lives better. The Plan |
"We should sell the gingerbread cookies to the school community, we could make some money for the Plan Canada Initiative" she stated naively. |
The first act in 'THE PLAN' as we have begun to call it, sell homemade gingerbread cookies. THANKS Lorraine family for inspiring us to donate to Plan Canada, THANKS Richardson family for making cookies with us, you had no idea what you were getting yourselves into. If anyone is interested in buying cookies, we are taking orders AND will sell the day of.
The students have decided they want to raise $500 for Plan Canada, they would like to Equip a school with essentials to learning. They would also like to buy a Baby Buffalo for a community ($250), buy a farm load of animals for a community ($190), buy Malaria nets ($10 a piece), buy a Goat Holiday Bundle ($95) and a host of other items related to health, clean water, education and farming. What I LOVE is they are empowered, they are learning, they are growing and they KNOW they can make a difference. The Kindness project is growing.

Kindness Continues
We are continuing to make our Milk Bag Mat "yarn". There is a pause in the production as I have NO IDEA how to crochet the yarn into mats but we will get there too.
I have been receiving cookies every morning from a student in class, what a thoughtful treat. I have also been receiving oranges and apples from others, our children are so very thoughtful. Kindness is everywhere.

Appreciation Circle
This morning we engaged in an Appreciation Circle; sharing one thing we really appreciated about the student teachers we have had for the past month. Some of the things the students liked and will miss;
- Math lessons
- Science lessons
- The time Ms Larkin and Mr Antoniak took to help them
- The smiles and enthusiasm
- The excitement and interest the teachers showed in their lives
- The patience with the students.
Random Acts of Kindness
One student came in exhausted this morning, she spent last night doing dishes and re-stacking the wood for her family fireplace (it had fallen down outside) - she just noticed these things needed doing. It's a virus. What's next in our little classroom?
Mrs. Shields has been inspired by our Random Acts of Kindness and walked into our classroom with the YUMMIEST candy canes for us to enjoy as a late afternoon snack. It's catching...
This past weekend, they were required to find time to randomly act - sharing kindness with others.
The results were amazing;
Last week the children were asked to share a random act of kindness that had been bestowed upon them, they were so thoughtful and focused when thinking about the kindnesses.
Our thoughts were just awesome;

This past weekend, they were required to find time to randomly act - sharing kindness with others.
The results were amazing;
- Children made their parents or siblings a meal.
- Students made sure to compliment a family member or a friend.
- During shopping trips, they looked for strangers in need.
- This morning, one student shoveled the driveway and walkway for their parents.

Our thoughts were just awesome;
- A sister who helped pick up pots
- A mother who made a special meal
- A stranger who gave a gift, she said "Pay it Forward"
